Education in Gender Studies at basic and advanced levels

What does it mean to be a woman or a man today? Why is men’s violence against women so common? These are some of the issues that Gender Studies wants to analyse. Gender Studies investigates how gender serves as a basis for social structures and what impact gender has on the life and opportunities for individuals in society.

When reading Gender Studies in Umeå, the main focus for your studies are on the power relationships between men and women. You also study how various dimensions of power in society such as gender, class, sexuality and ethnicity are interwoven. During the courses you will meet teachers from various disciplines and discuss gender issues from different perspectives.

Knowledge about gender issues is popular in many areas of employment today, such as in schools, media, public and private management. Consequently, we try to develop the students’ ability to view texts and activities from a critical gender perspective. This knowledge is very useful, especially for those who study Gender Studies in combination with other university education.
